Marietta and Jeremy left sunny California on Christmas Day to travel to Banff for their romantic Banff elopement. The week leading up to their wedding, the weather in Banff was unseasonably warm. When their special day approached, as mountain weather sometimes does, it took a turn. Undeterred, Marietta and Jeremy were in the best of spirits, so in love and fully focused on being present on their special day.
On wedding day, Marietta and Jeremy met up with their photographer, Kim Payant Photography, and their videographers, Parfait Productions. It was important to the couple that every precious moment be documented and commemorated for themselves, their family and their friends.
In a small, intimate ceremony at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, the couple exchanged their heartfelt vows to each other.
With Italian lace, the bride looked beautiful in the handmade dress and floral crown she lovingly made.
“Nunc scio quid sit amore.” ~ Now I know what love is.
From the Bride:
How did you meet?
“We first met in the beer garden of a music festival in Los Angeles. We had mutual friends and neither of us could find them, so we ended up spending the whole time at the festival together getting to know each other. As the second day of the festival was ending, Jeremy said, ‘I just have to do this’ and leaned in and kissed me. He walked me to my car and said, ‘I want to know everything about you’. I knew then that this was someone I wanted to give my heart to and we’ve been inseparable ever since.”
Tell us about your proposal. How did Jeremy propose?
“A year after we met, we took a trip to Japan. One of the things we had planned was to climb to the top of Mt. Fuji. We planned to start our hike at 10pm to summit for the sunrise. We napped at a mountain hut at the base and woke up for a late meal and to start our ascent. It was pouring rain and we were hoping it would let up soon. It didn’t. Even with our mountaineering gear on we were completely soaked through a few hours later. We were also reaching an altitude were it was extremely cold and the rain was turning into snow. We were only a few hours from the top, but we had to turn back as the cold temperature combined with our now heavy, thoroughly drenched clothes would have caused our clothes to freeze and we’d be putting ourselves in an emergency situation. On top of that the winds had picked up and now the driving rain in the pitch black made it impossible to see even with our headlamps. We kept almost losing the trail. The decision was made to turn back and Jeremy reached our for my hand and yelled into the howling wind and rain, ‘Will you marry me?!’ I laughed and yelled, ‘Yes!!’ and then we ran stumbling and laughing, holding hands, as fast as we could back down the trail. It was scary, crazy, and fun. We genuinely lost the trail lower down and had some real moments of fear when we wondered whether we’d make it. With luck we came across a familiar landmark and new which way to go to get back to the hut. He gave me the ring at breakfast the next day. The box was soggy. All’s well that ends well. :)”
Why did you choose Banff for your wedding location?
“We chose Banff because we lived in Los Angeles and were craving some real Winter weather with snow and mountains. We’d always heard of how beautiful Banff was and it was a travel destination that we really wanted to experience.”
What was your favorite part of the day?
For both of us our favourite part of the day was saying our vows to each other. 🙂 We were so touched by what we wrote for each other and it was a very meaningful moment. My second favourite moment was eating the wedding cake that Crystal at Cake Creations made for us! The bottom layer was vanilla cake with espresso buttercream and the top layer was chocolate cake with mint buttercream. We were starving after the long day!”
Wow! You made your own wedding dress. Tell us about it!
” I used 2 patterns from the early 1960’s that I bought on eBay as a guide and one modern pattern. The two patterns from the 60’s, I combined the bodice pieces to make one bodice with some features of each. Then, I radically modified the fit of tha (e.g. the shape of the darts, the shape of the armholes, I dropped the back of the dress lower).
With the modern pattern I made the silk under bodice (with the sweetheart neckline) and other than making it smaller and longer it remained pretty much unchanged. The sleeves and silk bandeau I made on my own by making my own patterns. The skirt was 24 panels of tulle that Jeremy had to cut out and sew together, because I ran out of time! I had to hand sew the buttons onto the back of the dress while he did that. I wouldn’t have finished in time without him!
I sewed two tulle crinolines together to get the length and volume I needed for the skirt. They’re the biggest crinolines you can buy and I still needed two!”
Your Honeymoon Story?
“Banff was our ‘weddingmoon’, which apparently is becoming popular; having a destination wedding and then staying there for the honeymoon. It was so nice to have the wedding at the beginning of the trip and then get to explore the area and relax at the hot springs for the rest! We hiked Johnston Canyon, went dog-sledding, saw Lake Louise and the Chateau Lake Louise, tried many excellent restaurants, day-tripped to Radium Hot Springs, shopped on Banff Ave, and saw the cave at the Cave and Basin. Very cool!” ~ Marietta
