Today we’re speaking with  Trish Boyko and Matt Ling, the talented duo behind f8 Photography Inc., a Calgary based wedding and portrait studio. I’m a huge fan of their work! They are wonderful, creative people and so fun to work with! Their individual personalities and skill sets complement each other so perfectly. As a team, they deliver an amazing client experience!

Tell us a little about your background and what path led you to starting f8 Photography Inc.?

Trish – “I graduated with a BFA in Fine Art from the University of Calgary. I still wasn’t sure which direction to go with my photography. I started assisting photographers: food, architecture, fashion, interior design, weddings, worked at FFWD (Fast Forward), managed a photography studio & through all this discovered I love photographing people. Weddings were my absolute favourite at the time, however over the last 19 years I’ve expanded to families, babies & professional portraits.”

Matt – “I didn’t have too much to do with photography until I met Trish. She needed an assistant at a wedding she was shooting one day and found I really enjoyed it! 17 year later I now shoot the majority of weddings, while Trish focuses more on her portraiture work.”

Where does your name f8 Photography Inc. come from?

I named the company f8 for many reasons. f8 is an aperture on the camera and considered to be the sweet spot, 8 is my favourite number and a good luck number in some cultures. I like how it is also the symbol for infinity when turned on it’s side and also because of the play on words f8/fate.

In a nutshell, what’s your company policy or manifesto?

real life. real love. real photography

We’re down to earth people and photographers. We love capturing real moments of love. Whether it’s a newborn baby, a family shoot, an engaged couple or a wedding, we’re always looking to capture the real moments of love and beauty.”

What three words best describe your photography style?

real, colourful, beautiful

Favourite part of a wedding to shoot and why?

Trish – “I love it when the bride puts on her dress and realizes – this is it, all those years of dreaming and planning – the moment is finally here.  I also love the couple’s portraits when we get them away from the busyness of the wedding day and they get to spend some time alone, look at each other and be themeselves.”

Matt – “I’m a real people person and I enjoy the whole wedding day. If I had to narrow it down I’d agree with Trish and say my favourite part is when we get the couple to relax in front of the camera and we capture real moments between them.”

You’ve been shooting weddings for awhile now and have achieved many awards and accolades over the years. What’s your proudest achievement to date?

It would have to be photographing the cover of Calgary Bridal Guide last year and also for Matt getting a job as a photography instructor at SAIT.

Speaking of being involved in the wedding industry for so long now, how do you manage the shooting, editing and the day to day running of a business while maintaining a balance with your family life?

It’s a continual effort to create balance. We keep Sundays as family day with our kids and plan vacations. We love camping and occasionally escaping to Mexico – something to look forward to and get us through when it gets busy! We also involve our kids in our work whenever possible, sometimes bringing them along to out of town weddings or getting them to help with family and baby shoots. They’ve even been hired as models for shoots or to help wedding planners with wedding set up!

As a husband and wife team, what’s it like working together? How do you make it work and how do you handle creative differences?

It’s not always easy working together, we had to learn our strengths and weaknesses. We created specific roles and tasks that we each do, and that helps. We had a business coach who really helped with this and we learned to allow each other to do what we’re each best at. For example, Matt is great with people and meetings. I’m great with organization and running of the business. I often say Matt is the face of f8 Photography, while I run the show behind the scenes.

Next question is for Matt. The wedding industry is still predominately a female industry. In addition to your wife Trish, you have two girls at home, is this why you have a ‘mancave’? To get away and unplug?

“Yes definitely! I escape there to play guitar, listen to records and watch boxing. It keeps me sane.”

What’s on your playlist?

Trish – “Bob Marley, Leonard Cohen, Joel Placket, Johnny Cash and Top 40.”

Matt – “From Nick Cave to Bo Didley, anything from Bloodshot records… blue grass, old country, folk, rock.”

Next one is for Trish. You say you almost always “have a bird accessory on you somewhere”? What’s that about?

“I love sitting and watching birds; they relax me. Having a bird accessory reminds me to relax a bit throughout the day.”

What’s your favorite activity or hobby to do in your spare time?

Trish – “Riding my bike, either in spin class or on the bike paths. I’m a huge reader. I read at least a book a week if not more.”

Matt – “Riding my motorcycle, playing guitar, hanging out in the shed (aka mancave).”

When you’re not shooting weddings, your family spends a lot of time in the mountains. What’s your favourite thing to do in the mountains as a family?

We usually just try to go to the mountains to relax, enjoy the scenery and maybe do a short walk in the woods. It’s great to get out of Calgary and see something other than buildings and vehicles. I (Trish) grew up in the mountains (Rossland BC) and crave seeing them often.”

Any advice for couples trying to choose their wedding photographer?

Choose someone you genuinely like and get along with. You’ll spend the majority of your wedding day with them and you want it to be a fun, relaxing experience. Look for someone who’s photography style reflects you as a couple. We focus on capturing the real moments of love between couples – another photographer’s style might be high fashion, or super grungy. Choose a photographer whose style you love!

Calgary Questions:

What’s your favorite neighbourhood and why?

Ramsay! It’s where we live! It’s near the bike paths and two rivers. It has a community feel and we have great neighbours! It has close access to everything we want: farmer’s market; great coffee shops and live music venues.

What’s the last great meal you ate? Where and What?

Trish – “The Coup. I ate my favourite vegan meal. It’s a broccoli, spinach tofu stay on rice noodles – to die for!”

Matt – “Blaze Pizza – ‘build your own pizza joint’ with as many toppings as you want – delicious!”

What’s Calgary’s best kept secret?

The Alberta Corner Store in Ramsay. It’s been a convenience/grocery store for over 100 years and it’s kitty corner from our house! They’re open everyday from 10:30am to 7:30pm. They sell everything from milk to drywall anchors, to 6 kinds of dog food, to wasbi peas and pre made meals. It’s the heart of our community and we LOVE having it so close.”

Tell us a little about what you studied and what path led you to creating Jennifer Bergman Weddings?

I have a Bachelor of Commerce with a specialization in Marketing from the Alberta School of Business. My event planning experience began in University where I worked on a committee planning a student business conference at The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, called Rocky Mountain Business Seminar (RMBS). When I graduated the company I was working for had me takeover their national convention, so I gained fantastic experience in event planning. I noticed that the wedding industry was very underserved in Edmonton and decided to jump in – I haven’t looked back!

You’ve received a fair amount of press and awards over the last couple of years, what’s your proudest achievement to date?

It was really special to win the Canadian Special Events 2014 Star Award for ‘Best Wedding Under $75K’, and that same wedding was also a top 3 finalist internationally in the ISES Esprit Awards.

Can you give us a little insight into the workings of Jennifer Bergman Weddings? How is your office structured, how many people do you employ etc.? Are you still personally involved in the event design and process of all your weddings?

We are a boutique firm, meaning we are selective with the number and type of weddings we take on each year. We want to ensure we can devote sufficient time and energy to each event and couple.

I personally handle all Full Service contracts – this involves planning, design and coordination of the event from start to finish. My incredible team works with couples who hire us for Wedding Day Management.

Who is the Jennifer Bergman Weddings’ couple?

Busy professionals who want a quality produced event but know they don’t have the time or expertise to accomplish this alone. Our clientele want to wow their guests with the wedding experience and design – they want something timeless, gorgeous, and for the day to run seamlessly.

What is Jennifer Bergman Weddings looking forward to in 2015?

We have a lot of incredible weddings on the horizon! We’re working with couples who really want to push the boundaries of creativity – they’re asking for unique weddings that will WOW their guests, and we’re happy to oblige!

List 2-3 resources across any media that you turn to regularly for creative inspiration?

I enjoy watching what’s being done at big events and weddings in the U.S., especially in LA and New York. I also travel as often as possible and attend conferences to see what’s going on in other markets and countries. We try to be the first to bring ideas, trends and new décor and design elements to our Alberta clients.

What would your dream project or collaboration be?

A destination wedding in Europe…or Bali!?

What’s on your own playlist?

Lots of hip hop and R&B, EDM, Top 40…in Vegas last year I saw Calvin Harris, Britney Spears and in the same day – that’s a perfect illustration of my music tastes.

What’s your favourite activity to do in the mountains?

Hiking or running, if the temperature permits. If it’s cold – sitting next to a fireplace with a glass of bubbly.

Where would we find you on a typical Sunday afternoon (when you don’t have a wedding)?

Going for a jog in Edmonton’s River Valley with my husband.

Rapid Answers…

  • Tea or Coffee? Coffee in the morning, tea at night.
  • Paris or New York? New York
  • Sunrise or sunset? Sunset
  • Summer or Winter? Summer
  • Yoga or Sports? Both! But if I have to pick I’d choose sports because I’m pretty competitive.

Thanks so much Jennifer for sharing the JBW story with us!!

I’m super excited to be sitting down with the very talented Jenna Andersen, owner of Canmore & Banff Makeup Artistry. Jenna is originally from the heart of Toronto and though she may have big city roots, she’s mountain through and through. She’s as comfortable on a solo mountain hike or heli-touring the rockies, as she is working major fashion shows. Aside from being the mother of two, Jenna is first and foremost an artist. She’s highly creative and passionate about her art, whether it be her makeup artistry or music (she’s the daughter of a professional musician and has serious musical talents herself).

Jenna has garnered much attention for not only her makeup artistry, but also for her professionalism. She has worked for several major fashion and beauty companies and her work has been featured as a bridal makeup artist by Martha Stewart Weddings, WedLuxe Magazine and Flare Fashion Magazine.

Tell us a little about your background and what path led you to becoming a makeup artist?

My father is a drummer, from birth. Playing with Anne Murray, Alice Cooper, Rough Trade, Peter Gabriel etc. When I was born, he was touring Japan with Anne Murray and they stopped the tour to fly him home on the red eye. It was an interesting and eclectic life. I grew up believing that nothing was impossible, on both a business and creative level, I was surrounded by eccentric, amazing people most of the time. I also grew up very fast and found drive early to be my own success, find my own talents, whatever they were going to be. I also sing and have put out multiple underground electronic tracks globally and worked as A & R for a vinyl label out of Toronto that I owned and ran with my partners for a period. The Arts were my everyday, my father’s music video shoots and backstage at concerts, surrounded my beauty and creativity. I met Michael Jackson when I was 8 and it blew my mind from a creative arts standpoint. My sister was a model, always on top of the trends, also in magazine and videos. She was immaculate with makeup and hair – perfection and beauty. She was 7 years older, I watched and learned.

Makeup artistry makes me feel completely free. My mind doesn’t think it just creates. I get to be completely my visions of beauty and push my boundaries for perfection with other peoples’ faces, it’s amazing. I am a perfectionist and it serves me well in this trade for my clients. Every new face is a new palette, new ideas, new canvas, none of them are the same and it comes from my mind. For me it’s art and the world stops when I’m painting.

You’ve worked in the beauty industry for over a decade and have worked for an impressive list of companies. Tell us more about that and what brought you to Canmore?

I was relocated out to western Canada (Alberta) from Toronto by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey) to become regional manager of their cosmetics division. I insisted on having a condo in Canmore, because of how beautiful it was, I was in love with the atmosphere and mountains.

What are some of the services you provide to mountain brides?

Mobile, onsite professional makeup applications for weddings, events, personal interest or learning, tailored makeup lessons, individual skin care consultations, makeup trials, personal shopping + consulting within the beauty niche, and vendor referrals.

canmore-&-banff-makeu-artistryWhat makes you different from other makeup artists?

I think we all have something creative in us, that we share as artists and creatives. I can’t say how I am different though. I can say what I bring to my work and that is heart and a high level of professionalism. I genuinely care about quality and what the person I meet gets from the experience with me and a little piece of me is left at every occasion. Because its art to me, like any artist you get attached to what you’re giving out. I love what I do and when you care about people genuinely, it creates something kind of magical.

How important is it for a bride to have a wedding makeup trial?

A makeup trial brings a client’s vision to life in real time, this is a great thing.

What’s the best beauty advice you can give to a bride planning her wedding?

Eat healthy & drink a lot of water, your skin is a reflection of what is happening on the inside of your body, in most cases. Invest in quality skin care appropriate to your needs and have a consult with me, to get you there.

What products are in your makeup kit?

Working for L’Oreal + LVMH, I love my Lancome and so many various prestige lines within the SEPHORA environment. I have a little bit of everything in my kit. From Dior & Anna Sui to Benefit & Urban Decay. After so many years in beauty, it’s not just about one great line, it’s finding the best products that work the best in each individual line and compiling a kit of the top products. When you look into my kit, you see 20 different lines, that’s because I have tried it all and now have what I love from each. It’s a really personal thing, it’s over a decade of trying everything to find the best, I’ve got it now. It’s like my secret box of amazing, at this point, I think.

What do you like best about being a makeup artist?

The feeling I get from my clients being happy. It’s beautiful to make someone feel beautiful and to give them exactly what they envisioned. I feel completely myself when I am being creative, so whomever is around me is getting the most authentic version of my personality, that makes it genuine.

What are some of your most exciting projects to date?

I have been working a lot with helicopters incorporating Heli-Weddings and fashion photography shoots in the mountainous backcountry. This has been an amazing addition to my career most recently. You are on top of the world, doing what you love, with other amazing creative people – it’s surreal.

Where would we find you on a typical Saturday morning when you aren’t working a wedding?

I am with my two children, probably eating sushi in Canmore or at the local bookstore reading, I am a big reader. XC skiing, snowboarding, hiking are also on the list. I am also a huge music nerd, so take any of the above and add a cool soundtrack to it and that’s our day.

What’s currently on your playlist?

Bon Iver, Modest Mouse, Led Zeppelin, Jedi Mind Tricks, Iron & Wine, Of Monsters and Men, Sia, Roo Panes, City and Colour, The Cinematic Orchestra, Souls of Mischief, Drake, The Rolling Stones, Beethoven, Rose Cousins, Aidan Knight, Death Cab for Cutie, Wiz Khalifa, Frank Sinatra.

Canmore Questions

What’s the best part about living in Canmore?

The calm and humbleness the mountains bring without trying. The majestic presence puts you back in your place and reminds you how minor you are. That’s a great thing.

Where and what was the last great meal you ate in Canmore?

Crazyweed – Tender Tartar & the Sun Gold Alberta Lamb Rack Chop.

What’s Canmore’s best kept secret?

Canmore itself, is the best kept secret of the Canadian Rockies, I think.

Check out Jenna’s music bio and one of her music tracks.

Thanks so much Jenna for taking the time to share your story with us and wishing you much continued success! Brides, you will be in great hands with Jenna as your makeup artist!
